Bio-hacking is generating self-awareness. It’s about finding your individual sweet spot by adding more of what makes you strong, happy and in a state of flow and removing what makes you weak in mind and body.
It is a process of discovery, not a blueprint that already exists and is a self-experiment that involves breaking down knowledge, trying new things, challenging norms and making your health a priority #1.
It involves collecting data through wearables, discussing and dabbling with supplements and nutrition hacks that others are trying, journaling your experience and combining your own experiences to manifest your most optimal self.
Hey team, here is your dose of a few things that I am currently buying, pondering, reading, tasting, testing, using or subscribing to. As always, take it or leave it, these things have found there way into my routine because they have made some sort of upgrade or positive effect on my being. Hope they do the same for you!
What I'm Reading
Tools of Titans by Tim Ferriss. This book is a bit of an intimidating 600+ pages at a glance but you really can get absorbed into the hundreds of golden nuggets that are presented page after page. This has not just been a book but a resource of so much motivation for me so far (over half way to go). Think self development, business, mindfulness, investments and positive habit creation.
Get it here.
What I'm Eating
Bulletproof Collagen Protein Bars. The best of the best. There's a lot of bars out there but most have a pretty crappy ingredients list. This bar, full of grass fed collagen, cacao, coconut oil, cashew butter and more, ticks all the boxes. I go through a box of 12 in roughly 1 hour.
Quote I'm Considering
"Everything big starts small and focussed".
I've been using this when it seems hard to look at the bigger picture of whatever it is I am working towards whether it be a new movement at gymnastics or new ideas I'm working on.
Thanks for reading, I hope these Take 3 inspire you for a new week ahead.
Train Holistic - Design Your Life
I brought you Keto balls, now I bring you another high fat alternative to your not so healthy treats – Keto Ice cream. This one is even easier than the Keto Balls and I suppose is more of a post dinner alternative to the usual sugar laden tub you would reach for before you made the conscious choice to go high fat. This might be an acquired taste to some but one thing I have noticed about a transition to a very low sugar diet is that when you do experience a sugary food again after abstaining from it for a while, its obvious the taste buds have made some serious adjustments.
I feel your pain. True keto/high fat snacks and treats a hard to come by and challenging to nail. If you are adopting any major nutritional change to your routine its hard enough as it is, but throw in the idea of minimising carbohydrate down to 50gms or lower a day and it becomes a whole new bag of worms. Just briefly, the idea of minimising carbohydrate intake, if you are not already aware, can have the effect of stabilising hormones, reducing cravings, allowing the utilisation of fat or ketones for energy rather than glucose, improve athletic performance, decreased 'post exercise' muscle damage, encourages some of the effects of fasting and can have great implications for neurological function.
When asked by Tim Ferriss what one thing he would put on a billboard, the multiple World Record holder and flamboyant Wim ‘The Iceman’ Hof said, “Breathe Motherfucker!” Wim has popularised ancient methods of using the breath to access or affect ones immune system and essentially taking control of the bodies temperature gauge. Despite views that Wim may have been an exception to the rule - a freak of nature, he has been able to scientifically prove otherwise and now showcases his methods on documentaries, an App that his son developed and in popular seminars around the world. I follow Wim’s breathing methods and practice them frequently with amazing results, purely perceived not scientifically tested results, but I get an unmistakable feeling that I am doing something better than I was before.
I’m all for letting the hair down. But I also enjoy being able to go away on a holiday and not return with a few spare tyres, a fried brain and to feel like your starting again when it comes to all your health and wellness gains. Some places are harder than others to be able to maintain the usual munching habits we are able to have with such availability of food choice. In Bali, although it might seem like there’s endless places to eat, actual quality food places are few and far between. But if you look hard enough, and endure a few bouts of Bali belly exploring the options, the good fatty food is out there in all its fatty goodness. I also made it a little mission of mine whilst I was in Bali to not give up one of my favourite morning rituals – Bulletproof Coffee. So to save you the hunt, next time you’re in and amongst the Bali hustle, here’s a few diamonds amongst the Nasi Goreng rough:
Lost for direction? Overcomplicating? No idea? Where should you direct your focus when trying to achieve health and wellness gains and even performance? Heres a few nuggets from me that may be already common knowledge to you or may incomprehensibly rattle your brain by being completely left field of your current behaviour:
It's a word that is getting tossed around more and more with the rise of the fitness and wellness movement and the interest that individuals and society as a whole are taking in the only real measure of wealth - health. At the heart, living a holistic lifestyle means that we engage our lives with interconnectedness on all levels: mental, physical, emotional and spiritual. Every being has a built in, internal intelligence that makes us capable of all of the things we are capable of which we may sometimes take for granted, like self-healing and recovery (reference a great book, Qantum Healing for more on that!).
If you are like the majority of the population, you are stuck on the aptly named SAD (Standard Amercian Diet) way of eating, chasing your hunger, weight and emotions on a largely high carbohydrate, low fat protocol that was designed, approved and marketed to you by the very industries that profit the most from mass carbohydrate consumption. It is an upsetting thought that you may have been completely mislead on the 'right' and healthy way to feed and nourish yourself your whole life, but it is something that can be fixed with a few changes. These changes can bring different challenges and implications person to person so it is important to consider whether they are the right changes to make for YOUR health and wellness.
These are the best paleo, low carb blueberry muffins you will ever taste.
Look around you next time your out in public. The vast majority of the people around you will be in consumption mode in one way or another. We are a society encouraged to consume and consume regularly. For some, the overly easy accessibility of things to consume, in this case food, makes it hard to avoid chowing down not only on food that isn’t remotely nutritious but chowing down when hunger isn’t remotely present. A constant caloric surplus, meaning someone’s energy expenditure is less than their intake of calories, leads to weight gain, inflammation and a constant stress on the bodies organs. Enter the muffin top...
